Fresh Hell

The charming Muscato reminds us August 22 is the birthday of my favorite writer, Dorothy Parker. Miss Parker was author of one of the few poems I can quote from memory:

O life is a glorious cycle of song;
A medley of extemporanea.
And love is a thing that can never go wrong.
And I am Marie of Romania.

Well, here we are.

  1. Oh dear. Why is it the only poem of her's I know by memory is:

    Acid stains you
    Rivers are damp
    Razors pain you
    Drugs cause cramp

    Guns aren't lawful
    Nooses give
    Gas smells awful
    You might as well live

  2. I was going to call this post "Might as Well Live", but Muscato beat me to it.

  3. By the time you swear you're his,
    Shivering and sighing,
And he vows his passion is
    Infinite, undying-
Lady, make a note of this:
    One of you is lying.

  4. Her review of Kate Hepburn's performance as "running the gamut of emotions from A to B" has to be one of the most ripped off lines ever.

  5. My favorite has always been the end of her review of one of A.A. Milnes's Pooh books:

And it is that word 'hummy,' my darlings, that marks the first place in The House at Pooh Corner at which Tonstant Weader fwowed up.

  6. You know, I'm not that familiar with Dorothy Parker's work.

    I know, I know...how could I NOT be a friend of Dorothy's...

  7. One of my favorites of hers is:
"A girl's best friend is her mutter."

  8. She's great. One of my favorites, too. I have a martini glass with her lines:

I like to have a martini
    Two at the very most
    Three I'm under the table
    Four I'm under the host

  9. You KNOW that is one of my all-time favorites!
